| An Oil on Canvas of the Circus Coming To Town by Tella Kitchen. Tella Kitchen (1902-1988) is often compared to Grandma Moses. She is known for her Folk Art Paintings and for Naive Landscape-figures. She is listed in: DAVENPORTS ART REFERENCE, THE ARTISTS BLUEBOOK, WHO WAS WHO IN AMERICAN ART, MUSEUM OF AMERICAN FOLK ART AND AMERICAN FOLK ART. One of her pieces is shown on plate 61, pg. 215 on FOLK PAINTERS OF AMERICA by Robert Bishop. She grew up in Vinton County, Ohio. She later moved to Attica, Indiana. She painted this oil from memory of the circus coming to Attica as a child. We purchased this in 1987 just before she died. I have tried to picture every scene in the painting. Every color in the rainbow, the homes in the background, the American Flag, the balloon vendor, clowns and the African American children on the other side of the fence. It is in Excellent condition. It has been reframed in 1988. The canvas is 22 x 27 1/4 inches. The frame is 25 3/4 x 31 3/4 inches. Please email if you have any questions about this painting. |
